Monochromatic Dressing

I'm a big fan of the monochromatic look---meaning dressing in one color. Not only is this style easy to pull off, but it's polished, chic and slimming when done right. Here is my advice for putting together a fabulous monochromatic outfit:

*Limit the number of pieces you wear. For instance, a brown jacket, blouse, pants, and shoes could end up making you look frumpy. However a black dress, black jacket and great black peep toe pumps could be amazing with a gorgeous statement necklace for a "pop" of interest.

*Mix varying shades of the same color. An example of this would be to mix shades of gray or blues together. Today I'm actually wearing a charcoal gray skirt with a lighter gray striped sweater and gray jacket.

*Incorporate prints that have monochromatic tones. A navy pair of pants paired with a silk blouse with multiple shades of blue is gorgeous.

*Be careful of your color choices. There are some colors that really shouldn't be used monochromatically, such as mustard yellow and celery green You get the picture.

*Mix fabrics and textures such as silks, leather and tweeds. This can make an outfit interesting!

* Play up your accessories. Punch in interest with a great piece of jewelry, scarf or belt.

Frizz-Ease 3-Day Straight

As someone who spends hundreds of dollars every 4-5 months on a Brazilian Blow-Out, I was very anxious to try John Frieda's 3-Day Straight. Could I actually get similar results to the Brazilian for much less money & time?

I spent $9.99 at CVS for a bottle of the 3-Day, which gave me about 5 treatments. Considering that I don't wash my hair every day, it lasted me for several weeks. I have to say that the product is impressive. My curly/frizzy hair turned straight and silky (with the help of a good blow-dry and flat-ironing) and stayed that way for a few days. Since the New England weather is cold and dry, I've yet to see the how my hair fares in humidity, but so far/so good.

The product is easy to use and after styling, you can see and feel a huge difference in your hair.
The drawbacks: The product can feel a little sticky going on--almost giving your hair the feel of swimming in salt water. The other semi-negative is that my hair feels a bit weighed down and doesn't look quite as shiny as normal.

Bottom line---I recommend giving this product a try, especially since it's inexpensive and simple to use. If you purchase it at CVS and you're not happy with it, save your receipt & they'll give you your money back.

If red is not a good color for you (it doesn't work for everyone!) try substituting raspberry. One trick for using contrasting colors...keep you accessories neutral!

Here's my advice...
Many of my clients have gained weight and are very unhappy with the way they look. Our bodies change over time and some of us will never be a size 8! Sometimes it’s just the way we’re built or the way our metabolism functions. My advice is to stay healthy—eat well, exercise, and take GOOD care of yourself no matter what your size is. And of course, my focus is on clothes. I truly believe that women of all sizes can look gorgeous. It’s a matter of knowing what styles and colors are flattering.
So many women put off buying themselves clothes because they’re “waiting” to lose 15 pounds –but guess what? That may not ever happen, or it may take longer than expected! Dress your best NOW! Not only will you look & feel great, but it will motivate you to eat less & exercise. When you’re feeling frumpy, you’re more apt to go after the Oreos!

Caring for Jeans

Long live your jeans! Keep them in great shape with these tips:

Get a few wears out of your jeans before washing them. Washing too often will wear out your jeans before their time & cause them to fade more quickly. If your jeans get stretched out between washings, throw them in the dryer for 3-4 minutes.
Wash your jeans inside out and in cold water
Avoid the dryer! Hang your jeans to air dry. When dry, throw them in the dyer for just a few minutes to de-wrinkle and to soften them up.
Distressed (boyfriend style) jeans should be hand washed to keep them from fraying.

From Design Vignettes...

If you are a big HGTV fan (like I am) and just watched the season finale of Design Star on Sunday night, then you are familiar with the winner, Emily Henderson, stylist and author of the blog The Brass Petal. During the last couple of episodes of the season-long challenge, each of the remaining contestants had to share what their future design show concept would be. Emily, who has professional experience styling interiors for numerous publications, proclaimed that her show would celebrate the wardrobe-to-room concept (Domino magazine was famous for this).

While we viewers were all wondering who would win (although I knew from the start it would be her!), Emily was actually busy taping her new show. She has shared on her blog that the final format will be a bit different (since it has been done before by Thom Filicia of Dress My Nest) and will be called “Secrets from a Stylist.” I can’t wait to see what she has to share, especially since I love styling spaces to create visual stories, and I know she will have a lot of great insider info on how to create great looks in
whatever space they throw her way.

I still love a good outfit-to-room, however, and for the next few weeks I will be featuring a collaboration between myself and fashion coach, Susan Kanoff, who I met through a mutual friend, Ginny Williams at a recent event. Our first project involves creating a classicly tailored room based on an outfit worn by
a woman who appreciates classic style.

The trench coat above is a stylish solution for dealing with the past few days of cold and wet weather that we have been experiencing here in the Boston area. I used its camel color to define my room in the form of the antique mohair sofa. I used the quilted pattern from the vintage Chanel bag as inspiration for the patterns in the room (lampshade uses cream and tan while the Moroccan table with mother-of-pearl inlay has some of the brown from the leather belt). A black lacquered coffee table with great legs and a stylish silhouette speaks to both the Louboutin shoes and my fashion favorite, the pencil skirt. While the Anthropologie light fixture is on the pricey-side, it is certainly a show stopper, much like the way a great piece of jewelry will often get all of the “where did you get this?” attention.

Next week I will show a room based on Susan’s picks for the back-to-college crowd, followed by some visual advice for decorating with fall fashion colors in mind. Being in the stores so often with my clients gives me way too many opportunities to buy, buy, buy---so a good closet weeding was definitely in order! Katty was amazing. How to Shop Your Closet!

Sound familiar? You have a closet full of clothes but nothing to wear. You have a tough time putting together outfits. You have so many clothes that you forget what you actually own. The solution to these problems is not to keep buying new clothes that you don't need, but to actually discover what's in your closet, get rid of the pieces you're not wearing, and learn to make new outfits from your existing wardrobe. Women spend thousands of dollars a year on clothes, shoes and accessories, yet they tend to wear only a fraction of what they own. By rediscovering and recycling your clothes, you can save money and help the environment at the same time!

The first step to shopping your closet is to familiarize yourself with the contents. This means a good closet clean-out. Get rid of anything that is tired, pilled, stained, ill-fitting or just not getting worn for one reason or another Sort your unwanted clothes by trash, donate, consign, etc. A fun way to recycle your clothes is to have a clothing swap with your friends. Break out the wine and cheese and have a ball trading clothes and accessories!

Once you've edited your wardrobe, you have a clean slate to work with. By weeding out what you're not wearing, it will be easier to organize your clothes and create new outfits. I recommend organizing your closet like a store by grouping together pants, tops, blouses, skirts dresses, jeans, etc. I also like to sort these groups again by color (ex: black pants, beige pants, brown pants, etc). The more organized your closet is the better! Also, make sure that you can see what you own. If you have fabulous shoes that are tucked in the back of your closet in a shoe box, chances are that you'll forget about them. Make sure that everything is visible and easy to access.

The next step is to reinvent your clothes by using the pieces in new and different ways. The goal is to stretch what you already own. Think out of the box by breaking up sweater sets and suits and dressing up more casual pieces with accessories. A great way to get fresh ideas is to start your own inspiration book or board by clipping magazine pictures of outfits you'd like to replicate from similar pieces that you already own.
For example, if you like a photos of a model wearing dark wash jeans, a white blouse and a turquoise necklace, you might be able to put together a similar outfit from what you have in your closet.

The last step is to make a focused list of what you need to complete your wardrobe. Perhaps you own a great floral silk skirt that has remained unworn because it needs a top to go with it. Or maybe your wardrobe is lacking some essential pieces such as fabulous tees or a good blazer. Make a focused list so that you only purchase what you need. Before you shop, do some research on the web to find out what's on sale and which stores have the best selection of what's on your shopping list.

Meet Nancy Wood, the 3rd place winner of the Mom Makeover Contest. I met Nancy a few weeks ago at the TJ Maxx in Newton . Our mission was to spend her prize ($100 AMEX card) on new clothes. With Nancy's husband out of work, she has been working two jobs to keep the family afloat--so clothes shopping just hasn't been in the budget. Nancy showed up wearing a "too-long" raincoat, ill-fitting pants and a stretched out top, doing NO justice to her fabulous figure!

With just $100 to spend, I wanted to make sure that Nancy got pieces that would mix and match. Since her lifestyle is casual, we chose clothes that were both practical and versatile. We decided on two pairs of capris, four tops, a great pair of sandals and a neutral bag, giving Nancy a much more flattering and updated look.

Nancy must have told me ten times how much this makeover meant to her and how excited she was to focus on herself for a change. She loves her new look!

I am so happy to be a part of their makeover & to have the opportunity to help these wonderful women look and feel great.

My name is Susan and I am nominating my mother, Brenda Taylor, for this makeover. I believe she is highly deserving. My mother is such an amazing mother and always fights for what is right even through all of the stress she's been through this past year. She has been a nurse for over 20 years and a mother for almost 19 years. My mother is recently separated from my father. She left to give us three a better life (excessive stress on marriage when he lost his job). She recently survived a pulmonary embolism and was diagnosed with diverticulitis as a result. From January to March, she was in and out of the hospital due to these things. Not many people survive a pulmonary embolism, but she did! She has been out of work since January due to these tragedies. She finally got a new job working for the state as a nurse and starts in two weeks! I am so proud of her! Reinventing Yourself from the Inside Out

I've been working with my dear friend, Life Coach Ginny Williams on a new venture called Reinventing Yourself from the Inside Out. Yesterday was our pilot workshop---or should I say, more of a day retreat for helping women "unearth their inner and outer brilliance". The morning session was all about working on the "inside"---learning about ourselves and reconnecting with who we are...powerful stuff! We broke for lunch and then I took over for the afternoon session which was all about clothes, the messages our "look" sends, and ways to build a fabulous wardrobe that reflects who we are, inside and out.

Timeless Spring Pieces

It's fun to add a few trendy pieces to your wardrobe each season, but you can save money by buying "season-less basics", or in other words, classic pieces that can be worn almost all year round. Here's what I recommend:
1. A fabulous leather jacket that fits like a glove in a light weight and in a light color such as camel or cream. Not only will this jacket go with everything but it can also be worn pretty much all year round.
2. Little black dress: I'm constantly hounding my clients to buy a great black dress since it never goes out of style! Simplicity is the key here---go with a scoop neckline, short sleeves (or no sleeves) and either a straight or A-line bodice which will make changing up your look with a cardigan or jacket effortless! I just learned of The Donna Karan Infinity Dress which can be worn 7 different ways! It seems pricey at almost $1,000, but you basically get 7 dresses in one!
3. Hoop earrings---good size and thin in either gold or silver depending on your preference
4. A lightweight boyfriend blazer that can be worn to work, over a dress or with jeans or capris.
5. Fabulous jeans--I like J. Crew, Jag, Not Your Daughter's, J. Brand, and CJ Cookie Johnson.
6. Camel color pumps or peep-toes. Camel is a hot color this season and is so neutral that it goes with everything.
7. Pencil skirt--the style will flatter almost every body shape and the classic cut won't go out of style
8. Perfect tee shirts---whether wearing with jeans and a blazer or dressing up with a sequin scarf or statement necklace, you can never have enough great fitting basic tees. Try 3 Dots.
9. A little animal print. No longer considered a trend, animal print has become a classic. Watch out that you don't over-do it, but in moderation animal print can look chic and will be a great addition to your wardrobe. If you're a bit timid, add in animal print with a tote, scarf or shoes or go all out with a dress, skirt blouse, coat or cardigan.
10. A classic style watch. I love the look of a simple watch---it's so classic and timeless (no pun intended!). You don't have to spend a fortune--Timex, Fossil, Ann Klein and even Target have some great watches.

It’s been a long winter and pretty soon it will be time to put away the heavy wool sweaters and start thinking spring clothes! If you’re worried that your spring wardrobe isn’t up to par, take a peek at what’s “in” this season & have fun incorporating some updated pieces into your collection.

Neutrals: Soft neutral colors are everywhere this season---shades of pale gray, beige, peach, and taupe are this spring’s staple colors. Unfortunately not everyone can wear these colors since they tend to wash some women out. If you have this issue, mix soft neutrals with bright colors such as shades of turquoise, coral, and blue. Some of my favorite color combinations are light peach with coral, light gray with turquoise, and layered shades of sand, beige and khaki. I also love neutrals with metallics!

The Military Look: In moderation, this trend looks good on many women and is actually easy to pull off. I personally like a subtle military look such as a khaki or olive jacket.

Leggins: Again, not a trend for everyone, but if you can wear leggings they can be ultra-cute and very comfortable. Pair them with a long tee (belted or unbelted) and a fitted jacket or with a short dress. Finish off your outfit with either heels or flats depending on the look you’re going for. A nice alternative to leggings are the new “jeggins”, a mix between jeans and leggings. Jeggins are a little thicker than leggings and look more like a skinny jean.

The Shirtdress: I’m so glad that the shirtdress is in style this spring. Not only is this dress flattering on so many different body shapes, but it’s a wardrobe staple that can go from day to night with a switch of shoes and accessories.

Florals: Beautiful feminine florals are back in style in shades of blues, purples and pinks.

Accentuate a plain tee shirt with a gorgeous floral scarf or cardigan.

Boyfriend Blazer: The longer & slightly oversized blazer is a simple and chic piece. Try rolling up the sleeves to show off a great lining! Wear over a tee shirt or tank with jeans.

Wedges: For those women who find heels uncomfortable, try a wedge this season.

Wedges look great with just about everything and can be extremely comfy. Try a neutral color wedge such as a camel or khaki color for a "go with everything" shoe!

Embellished Tees: Who says tee shirts have to be boring? I’m loving this season’s tee shirts which are embellished with stones, sequins, and lace!

Gorgeous gray

Yes ladies, gray is a neutral and can be mixed with just about every color of the rainbow! This spring, shades of gray are hot and look fabulous when paired with bright colors such as coral, purple, turquoise, pink, etc. Another way to wear gray is to colorblock, or mix different shades of gray or similar colors together (such as taupe). Of course gray always looks fabulous and crisp with navy, black or white too! For a touch of gray, add gray accents to your wardrobe with accessories---love the gray handbag from The Gap (shown below) and the fabulous necklace from Banana Republic.

Last week I had the pleasure of attending The Style Boston greyhound fundraiser at The Liberty Hotel in Boston. My TV client and dear friend Vicki Croke was the guest of honor and gave a wonderful talk about

With help from local wardrobe stylist Susan Kanoff and Applaud magazine publisher Susan Caldwell, single-mom Zena Silva of Methuen has been starring in her very own “Cinderella Story.” After losing 220 pounds in just two years, Silva was selected to be the recipient of a complete makeover provided by businesses in North Andover and the surrounding area.
Kanoff, who has a background as both a social worker and wardrobe stylist, wanted to organize a makeover for a low-income family. Coincidentally, Caldwell decided to expand Applaud magazine’s annual makeover project to help a woman from Massachusetts instead of the usual recipient, a woman from New Hampshire. Zena Silva has since become the beneficiary of their efforts.
“It’s been phenomenal,” said Silva. “I feel like a diva.”
The single mom has been working nights and wants to return to school to obtain a nursing degree.
“One of my goals was to live a healthier lifestyle,” said Silva, who found her motivation in her 9-year-old son.
Her determination did not go unnoticed. When Kannoff approached Ellen Weinhold at the Methuen Housing Authority — where Silva is enrolled in a program — Weinhold recommended Silva as a deserving candidate for the makeover.
“I think it’s going to be life-changing for her,” said Kanoff, who has helped Silva with making improvements to her wardrobe.
Kanoff said she has been showing Silva how to assemble stylish outfits and accessories while also teaching her about her body shape. Kanoff donated clothing from her own wardrobe, helped Silva get rid of clothing that didn’t flatter her new, slimmer figure and assisted her in choosing clothing during a shopping spree to Macy’s and to Night and Day in Andover.
“This project is my dream,” said Kanoff, who plans to coordinate new makeover projects for other Massachusetts women. “I can’t tell you how much I love doing this.”
Funding for the makeover budget came from anonymous donors, who contributed Kohl’s and Macy’s gift cards, and from Merit Tukiainen, owner of Night and Day in Andover, who donated apparel from her store as well as $500 worth of shoes. Other contributions have included four life-coaching sessions from Ginny Williams, a handbag and earrings from Coco Collection in Andover, and services from Skin Serenity Medispa in Haverhill.
The makeover concluded at Bella Vita Salon and Day Spa in North Andover on March 3, when Silva received a complimentary haircut and new hairstyle.
“We thought it would be a great way to help,” said Jill Cunha, manager at Bella Vita. “I hope she will want to keep up with it and build her confidence with a new style.”
With that new hairstyle, Silva will be the center of attention during a professional photo shoot at Beabe Gallery, which is adjacent to Bella Vita.
“I really think it’ll inspire her to take the next steps in her life,” said Heather Rogers, the photographer at Beabe, who said she was immediately willing to help the makeover process and to help Silva “jump-start her life.”
Applaud magazine will cover Silva’s transformation and will feature her in its April issue.
“This is the best makeover that we’ve ever done,” said Caldwell, adding that Applaud has been providing makeovers to deserving women for five years.
The magazine, which is published quarterly online as a resource for women of New Hampshire and northern Massachusetts, will organize another makeover next year and would like to follow Silva further and continue to write about the changes she makes in her life, said Caldwell.
“She is just such an inspiring person,” said Kanoff of Silva. “You meet her; you love her.”

Color Combos for Spring

With just a little over a month left of winter, it's time to start thinking about spring clothes.
If you've been to the mall lately, you'll see a lot of pale colors out there this season. Although gorgeous, these pale pastel shades don't work for everyone. However there are ways to incorporate these colors into your wardrobe without "washing" you out.

Combine a pale neutral color such as beige with a bright color.

Layer shades of similar colors--start out with a pale top and add a darker jacket for depth.

Punch in color with accessories such as jewelry or a bright scarf.

Pull in color with a cardigan

Some color combinations to try:

Light gray with blue, coral, turquoise, or navy
Navy and coral or turquoise
Light pink with dark pink
Charcoal gray with light gray, cream or beige

Instant pizzaz--animal print!

Animal print works well for women of all ages, is flattering and fun to wear! Incorporating a few pieces of animal print into your wardrobe is an easy and inexpensive way to add some pizazz and style. But beware---animal print can definitely be overdone which can create a trashy look.
Here are some tips for tastefully adding some leopard and zebra into your wardrobe!

Add ONE and only one piece of animal print to your outfit! I've seen many women who wear two or three different animal prints at the same time, which is both distasteful and distracting. Also avoid trying to match animal prints.
Animal print clothing and accessories don't have to be expensive, but should be rich looking. There are some really cheap looking animal prints out there. In other words, stay away from anything that looks trashy or is poorly made.
Animal print tend to look chic when combined with neutrals and solid colors such as black, chocolate brown, shades of beige and white.
If you're too timid to incorporate animal print into your clothes, try an leopard handbag, scarf or shoes.
For those women who are a bit more daring--add a leopard print dress or trench-coat to your wardrobe! To tone down a dress, add a cardigan or blazer in a solid color such as black or brown.

Tips for belting

The belted look is in, however not everyone can wear a belt the same way. Follow these tips to get your best look.
1. Think scale and proportions. Your belt should be in proportion to your size & frame. A huge belt is going to overwhelm someone who is petite, and a super skinny belt is going to look lost on someone who is larger framed.
2. Where the belt sits is very important. It should generally fall on the smallest part of your waist. If you are short-waisted be careful that it doesn't cut your torso in half instead of lengthening it. One trick is to let the belt sit lower on your hips. For those big busted ladies, watch out for very wide belts as they will accentuate your bust and make your torso look shorter.
3. Avoid over-accessorizing. A belt is an accessory. Avoid over-powering your outfit with too much going on. If your belt is fancy or embellished, keep the jewelry simple.
4. If the belt doesn't fit, don't wear it! The belted look is not for everyone. If you don't like the way a belt looks on you, skip it!

Here in Massachusetts, the weather is freezing! The wind is howling, the temps are only in the teens and all we feel like wearing is layers and layers of polar-fleece (not so fashionable!). So how do you look stylish while still staying warm? Here are some ideas:

Start with a pair of slim jeans or leggings:

Add a long sleeve tee and top with a cozy vest or long sweater

Casual Friday

Casual Friday dress is becoming more and more popular in offices and businesses. However there is a line between casual & professional and just plain sloppy. If you work in an office environment, keep in mind that casual does not mean slouchy, sexy or unprofessional. Here are my lists of casual Friday do's and don'ts:

Don'ts

If you can wear jeans to work, make sure that they are not ripped (no boyfriend jeans) and that the rise is not ultra low. Also, stay away from fading, whiskering or embellishments (such as rhinestones)
No graphic tee shirts, baseball caps and sneakers.
No sweatsuits or yoga pants (you wouldn't believe how many people I see wearing these to work!)
Watch skirt lengths (no minis)
No flip-flops in the summer
No tank tops
No wrinkled clothes!

Do's

Choose jeans in a dark blue, gray or black wash. Trouser cut jeans are the most tailored and professional looking as they tend to look more like pants than jeans.
Use cardigans and jackets to layer over silk tops or tees.
Instead of wearing sneakers for comfort, try a cute pair of flats instead
Casual skirts with a sweater boots and tights
Knit or shirt-dresses
Casual khaki pants with a blouse, sweater, jacket or cardigan
Keep jewelry simple

Here is an outfit ideas (which also makes great weekend look!).

Fabulous dark wash trouser jeans paired with a purple sweater, tweed blazer & flats. Accessorize with a metallic bag, silver hoop earrings and a cashmere scarf.

Outfit of the day:
Many of my readers have a difficult thinking that they can mix gray and brown. Here is a simple outfit idea that shows how great the colors look together. Remember, brown and gray are neutrals so they go with just about every color!

Start with a dark brown pair of trousers or cords, add a cream tee or top and layer with a gray cardigan (which you can wear belted or unbelted). Pull the outfit together with a great necklace, earrings, pumps or boots and a fabulous bag!

Thank you to everyone for all the great blog feedback. I can tell that this is going to be a fun project!

So, yesterday I gave you some ideas for transforming a simple black dress into a fabulous outfit. Today I want to focus on your closet since it's key to developing a great wardrobe.

What's the inside of your closet like? Is it stuffed with clothes that you don't wear, or don't know that you even have? The experts say that we wear 20% of our clothes 80% of the time. This is SO true! We tend to gravitate toward the clothes that look the best on us, are the most comfortable, and are the easiest to make outfits with. The rest just gather dust, take up space and go unworn.

Closet cleaning can be a huge and overwhelming project. I offer closet revamping sessions as one of my services and some jobs can take over 7 hours! If the task of going through your closet is too daunting, try doing it in sections. My challenge to you is to start with one side of your closet and each day take 15 minutes sorting through 5 or 6 pieces of clothing. Try each piece on and ask yourself the following questions:

Do I love how this looks on me?
Does the color work for me? Does it make my skin glow and my eyes sparkle OR does it wash me out?
Does it fit? If not, can it be tailored?
Do I have something to wear with it? (If the piece is great but you need something to go with it, start a shopping list).
Is it comfortable?
Is it in good condition or is it pilled, ripped, stained, etc?

If you've answered "no" to any of these questions, chances are there are clothes you're not wearing. My advice? Move them out! Your closet should only contain the clothes that fit you well and look great on.

So what can you do with the "to go" pile?
1. Consign. If your clothes are in-style and in good condition, you can make a few extra dollars at your local consignment shop.
2. Donate. Many social service organizations are happy to get clothing donations. Try homeless shelters, The Salvation Army, and Dress for Success. Many times you can get a receipt for your donations which you can use for tax purposes.
3. Throw out. If your clothes have seen better days, throw them away!

By cleaning your closet in sections (perhaps a section a night or a couple of sections a week) you will be on your way to a clean and organized closet!

One last tip, make sure that your clothes are hung on the proper hangers. Wire and plastic tube hangers can stretch out shoulders and ruin clothes. I like anti-slip thin velvet covered hangers since clothes don't slip off and the hangers take up less space than thicker ones. These can be found at most stores including Target, Bed & Bath, and Walmart.

Enough about closets for today---onto clothes...

The white blouse is a piece that every woman should own. It's timeless style and versatility make it a wardrobe staple. Some of my favorite blouses are:

Welcome to my blog! My name is Susan Kanoff and I'm a wardrobe stylist, or fashion coach as I call myself. My background is in social work & my passion is clothes! I truly believe that the way you look is deeply connected to how you feel--inside and out. Close your eyes and imagine how you feel when you hate what you're wearing. Does your motivation diminish? Your self-esteem fall a few notches? Is your self-confidence not quite what it should be? Now imagine how you feel when you LOVE how you look! You feel radiant, polished, happy, and confident. You could even have a better day! Yes, it may sound shallow, but clothes are important.

After posting daily outfit ideas on Facebook and Twitter, a friend of mine encouraged me to start this blog, and together we came up with the name Dress your best--one outfit at a time. This blog is a place for women to visit to get fashion advice and ideas on how they can improve their wardrobe and their look. Every day I'll post simple tips as well as an easy outfit to put together.

My goal in starting this blog is to help women develop a fabulous wardrobe. This blog is not for the big time fashionista, those who are interested in runway fashions or haute couture, but for every woman. It's for us teachers, nurses, librarians, businesswomen and stay-at-home moms. It's for us middle-aged women who don't want to look like we're 20 but don't want to look like our grandmothers either. It's for those of us who want to look put together but not trendy. It's for "every woman".

The little black dress (if you don't have one, put it on your shopping list!)

This practical and versatile dress is a closet must have! It's amazing how many great outfits you'll be able to get out of just one dress. I encourage you to look in your closet and see if you have a simple black dress. I'm not talking about a fancy cocktail dress, but a casual dress with clean lines--even a tank dress will do. Now, tomorrow pull the dress out of your closet, pair it with black or gray tights, high black boots, and add a jacket or cardigan in any color or pattern. If you prefer to belt, you can belt the jacket or sweater with a metallic, snakeskin or plain leather belt. Polish off your outfit with some hoop earrings, a watch, a great bag and you're ready for work or lunch with friends.

Now keep in mind that this same simple black dress can transform into a night-time look with just a change of shoes, bag and jewelry. So, if you're at the office and want to take your dress from day to night, add chandelier earrings, hose, heels, a sparkly clutch and off you go, looking fabulous!
